USM students conduct mock investigation

About 25 students teamed up Thursday to investigate the reason for a Gulfport house fire. The students are part of USM Gulf Park's Arson Process and Courtroom Procedures.     

 

Probe fans flames of arson suspicion
Charges came about after an insurance company requested the state investigate, in part because of concerns that the insured's father is the fire chief and was acting as the city's fire marshal at the time.

 

Fire captain testifies in federal trial

It was the unusual crude candle timer and a plastic gasoline can used in a 2005 arson that led investigators to link that blaze to up to nine others in the late 1990s and early 2000s.  Property owners are believed to have collected nearly $1 million in insurance claims from the fires.

 

BRAWNER v. ALLSTATE INDEMNITY COMPANY
After a fire of incendiary origin destroyed their house, Jon and Renea Brawner sued Allstate Indemnity Company for denying a claim on a homeowners insurance policy. Allstate asserted that the Brawners' coverage was void because they made several material misrepresentations during Allstate's fire investigation.  This is the opinion of the appeals court upholding the claim denial.
